Mount Gravatt Multi-Generational Extension (Built 2025)
Owner’s Dream
The homeowners had lived in their property for many years and had designed the original house themselves. They loved their location and wanted to create a home environment that allowed them to live close to their children and grandchildren while still enjoying privacy and independence. Their hope was to build a self‑contained extension that felt generous, bright, and comfortable, unlike many compact prefabricated secondary dwellings on the market. They also wanted to bring their treasured furniture and belongings from their former five‑bedroom home into this new one‑bedroom layout without feeling as though they were scaling down their lifestyle. Maintaining full kitchen, laundry, and bathroom amenities was essential, as was creating a shared alfresco space that connects the two households.
Site Condition
The existing home already occupied a significant portion of the block, leaving a long and narrow area available for the extension. This shape created the risk of dark or cramped interiors, and the family did not want to modify the original house more than necessary. The project also needed to progress through a straightforward building approval process, which required the design to integrate sensitively with the existing house and align with the relevant regulatory framework. Within those parameters, we were able to explore a design that delivered the amenity and functionality the owners envisioned.
Architectural Designer Solution
Our design response focused on creating a bright, calm, and efficient home within the challenging footprint. A bespoke roof form, paired with carefully placed skylights and lightwells, brought daylight deep into the plan while preserving privacy between the old and new structures and maintaining sensitive relationships with neighbouring properties.
We designed the extension as a long‑term home that supports ageing in place, drawing on Livable Housing guidelines and accessibility principles. Every part of the floor plan serves a purpose. For example, the entry area comfortably doubles as a study, and cabinetry and circulation spaces were shaped to feel intentional rather than transitional.
A neutral, light‑reflective finishes palette enhances the feeling of spaciousness, while windows and openings were positioned to create openness without introducing overlooking or compromising privacy. The result is a warm and uplifting residence that allows the owners to remain close to family while enjoying the independence and quality of life they envisioned.
