Owner’s Dream – Oxley Queenslander Cottage

The owners of this Oxley Queenslander cottage wanted to remodel their home to complement their beautiful tropical plant-filled garden. The renovation needed to uphold the intimacy of the original home while bringing inside their incredible backyard experience. The owners needed another bedroom and the main living areas were to be updated in a modern fashion for longevity, functionality and view.

Site Condition

The property was located on a gently sloping site in Oxley, South-East Brisbane. The small cottage comprised of two bedrooms and one main living area. The home had been extended in the 50s and all indoor living areas had no access to the beautiful garden view. As a result, the kitchen felt cramped and inconvenient, and there was a distinct lack of flow between the indoors and outside.

Architectural Design Solution

Oxley Queenslander Cottage Renovation

PlaceMate Architects decided to flip the layout of the house and moved the kitchen and main living areas closer to the garden. A beautiful timber deck connects the modern kitchen to the backyard, and corner stacking doors allow for flow between the inside and the lush outdoors. A set of solid wood terraced steps sit between the deck and garden to unite it all together. Thus, the central living areas now feel fresh and full of life.

By moving the kitchen and living areas, the cottage now had space for an extra bedroom. PlaceMate Architects redesigned the original rooms and new bedroom to sit on an elevated level so the stunning view could be accessed from almost any section of the home.

The project came in on time and budget, and the owners of this unique home could not be more pleased with the outcome of their forever home.
